The purpose of Zach’s Gifted and Talented program is to provide expanded and accelerated learning experiences and creative opportunities that meet the needs of all identified students.
All teachers at Zach provide differentiation within the classrooms to meet the specific needs of their students. Students who show advanced abilities in 1st grade through 3rd grade are serviced within the regular classroom. Students in 4th grade who have been identified as gifted/talented in Math are in a classroom of their peers and progress at a faster pace and at a deeper level than the regular classroom. In 5th grade, students who have been identified as gifted or talented in Math are provided services in an advanced paced pullout class taught by the Gifted and Talented Coordinator. Emphasis is on thinking skills, logic, and an accelerated curriculum. Special activities/contests include Math Olympiad and The Stock Market Game. Students in both 4th and 5th grade who are identified as GT in Reading are in advanced paced pullout classes that focus on creative opportunities such as plays and project presentations. In addition, the students read not only the Core novels, but also experience a wide range of fiction and non-fiction books with high level discussions. Development of writing skills is highly emphasized. Instruction is student centered with student involvement being a cornerstone of each class period. These classes are also taught by the Gifted and Talented Coordinator. For more information, visit the GT section of the PSD website or contact our school GT coordinator.
